Following a sophomore year project where we learned about the socioeconomic component of obesity in our society, we were compelled to do something to help these very disadvantaged people build long-term healthy habits.
We were initially compelled to focus our efforts on expanding the SNAP program throughout Georgia. However, after coming across the Georgia Fresh for Less program, we found there was a gap: many SNAP recipients don’t know about the money they could save and the nutritional benefits they could gain just by shopping at participating farmers' markets.
We thus decided to change our purpose to encourage SNAP recipients throughout Georgia to take advantage of the Fresh for Less program and build nutritionally sound habits. Today, through partnerships with a variety of organizations across Georgia, we work to bring together stakeholders from all across the farmers' market sphere, including farmers themselves, consumers, and politicians.
